5 Things To Do Before Turning Off Your Heater Until Next Winter

Although the winter is clearly not quite done with us yet (as this last week proved!), it won’t be long now before spring graces us with its presence. That means some warm days, nice breezes instead of bitter-cold ones, and it also means letting your furnace take a well-deserved rest. But before you kick the old heater off for the season, there are some things you should be certain to get done. Find out what by following along with Signature HVAC!

Need some professional help getting your furnace the care and tuning it needs? Contact our furnace and heat pump maintenance specialists online today!

Why This Matters

You could just shut down the furnace and call it a day, right? Well you certainly could. But would it be wise to do so? Unfortunately, no. Post-season maintenance, both on the part of the homeowner and the HVAC professionals, is a critical part of keeping the furnace finely-tuned and ready for next year.

In short, if you like a furnace that is more efficient, cost-effective, and one that actually works come winter 2018, you want to make certain you get these things done!

Your Quick Post-Season Checklist

  • Replace the air filter. A clean air filter means free air flow, higher efficiency, and improved air quality in your home. You’ll want to replace the old worn-out one before you shut your system down, either to benefit your air conditioner this spring, or so that a clean one is in place before next winter.
  • Inspect for irregularities. While you should never fiddle around with electrical connections or the inner workings of your system on your own, it’s still a good idea to give the system a good looking over. Any dents, loose connection, strange lights or sounds, or inconsistencies in how the furnace runs should be noted and discussed next time you contact your heating service contractor.
  • If you have one, check the pilot light. A good, well-maintained pilot light should burn blue (orange means impurities or a dirty pilot), shouldn’t waver much, and should remain steady while on.
  • Give the unit a good cleaning. Removing dust that may have collected on or around the furnace mitigates a common fire hazard and ensures all of that gunk gets out of your home air circulation, keeping it out of your cooling system and out of your lungs!
  • Schedule furnace maintenance. Once you have all of your own ducks in a row, go ahead and schedule a post-season furnace or heat pump tune-up. Professional services like component checks, cleaning, and parts lubrication will restore your system and ensure its working at peak efficiency for next year.
